This family home expertly maximizes its narrow site, cleverly overcoming the obvious restrictions the site presented. The design centres on the south-facing back garden, ingeniously incorporating passive design principles despite a constricted width of only 3.3 meters. Through its materials, layout, and detailing, the home is highly responsive to its setting and purpose. The facade, constructed primarily from locally sourced stone, respectfully nods to Malta’s architectural legacy while offering a contemporary reinterpretation. Custom stone cuts and curved applications showcase the material’s adaptability, creating a compelling dialogue between tradition and innovation. This refined and elegant detailing ensures the home possesses a timeless yet relevant aesthetic.

This project’s architectural design reimagines Malta’s 1960s and 70s ‘new age vernacular’ style. Its most striking feature is a 13-meter-high natural stone block on the corner, creating a landmark feature with its setting of two-storey villas. The local hardstone cladding gives a natural quality, and the water-eroded ribbed design is a tribute to the coastal erosion prevalent in the Maltese Islands, making the building unique and ever-changing with the weather and time of day.
