This project offers superior and unexpected spatial solutions to the brief, making it stand out as a winning entry. The creative volumes, sustainability principles and innovative approach, as well as the contribution towards ameliorating the streetscape, mark this family home, which features a 25-m pool and a giant north-facing light-well. Environmental considerations introduced through studied orientation, introduction of natural light and ventilation, intelligent use of shading devices together with the sculpted geometry and overall cohesion results in an artful and playful contemporary building, which successfully manages to reverse the nondescript architecture that characterises such places.

Villa Saudade is a newly built house in an alley, carefully designed around a 100-year-old cypress tree. This has been characterised by interesting integration of materials and volumetric treatment, which makes it essential but not boring.  The adoption of a strict passive-design brief also attests sustainable credentials through the introduction of a central yard, inducing cross-ventilation in all spaces and levels, crafted around natural light and passive environmental design.  Marked highlights were the workmanship quality and the resulting detailing, with the clever use of exposed concrete designed finish.
